Born Lois Carby as one of twins, you were encouraged by creative and entrepreneurial parents, one of whom cemented your determination by reminding you always that the word "can't" did not appear in the dictionary! Determined to become an artist of international acclaim you began your journey at the Centre d'arts in Haiti, later studying in Mexico, New York City and Phoenix. You developed your own inimitable style, breaking conventions of colour and form. For you, colour is the ultimate expression of emotions and feelings and you are driven by the excitement and vibration of nature, your work hawing been described by art critics as reflecting a "deep sensitivity to moods", "painted with love, warmth, passions, romanticism and fantasy", "quiet but inescapable" and "inspired by the landscape of people". Such is the expression of this outstanding woman who has exhibited in Jamaica and invited to exhibit in places as diverse as Martinique, Mexico, Florida, Lithuania and Poland, honing her skills and achieving acclaim.
Lois your resolve extended to the world of business where you have been a team player and leader in your family enterprise, believing in the strength of family unity. Island Homes and Burger King are the current successes, but your business acumen was applied earlier to the business of furniture retailing, antiques and collectibles, and to other ventures in real estate development and construction. The success of Burger King Half-Way-Tree, which broke many records in the international franchise is due to your determination which defied the initial objections to the location - you were convinced of the wisdom of your choice of the site, and held to the position as you have done successfully in so many aspects of your life.
Your pioneering spirit has been demonstrated in inner city workshops in art and craft, art and craft fairs in downtown Kingston, and a contract for Jamaican dancers to perform for two months in Lithuania.
You described your greatest achievement as emanating from motherhood, and you exude joy in the family linkages that which now operate the businesses of the Lake
